About us

In the summer of 1994 three nursing staff from the General Hospital, Mullingar namely Sr.Anna Sloane, Maeve Clifford, and Kathleen Coakley could see a need for hospice care in the County.

They initially researched the idea and discovered that Westmeath was the only county in Ireland that did not have this service.  They set about getting advice from the Irish Cancer Society and the then Midland Health Board.

They also contacted neighbouring counties where the service was already well established. They received invaluable information and ideas which prevented them getting into any difficulties and thus avoiding extra work.

The next step was to form a committee.  They invited individuals from all walks of life to a local meeting.  As a result the committee was formed. Meetings were held monthly and the service developed slowly.

Thankfully fundraising was never a problem, the whole of North Westmeath was behind the foundation.  All three members who began this journey, initially 14 years ago, continue along with the other members of the committee to strive for an improved Hospice Homecare in our community.

Our committee consists of many multi professionals of all ages and they include:

  • Chairperson: Marie O’Brien

  • Treasurer: Brian Lalor

  • Secretary: Maeve Clifford

  • Administrative secretary: Aoife Bradley HSE
